laughlin family christmas

Posted by in family

the laughlins celebrated christmas at the smith homestead this year. all the cousins (sadie, gabe, rowan, sawyer, ramona, adam, and charlie) had a blast from the moment they walked into the house, beginning with tractor rides and hot chocolate, to the time they left. with presents, eating treats, more tractor rides and hot chocolate in between. the pictures say it all. a few last-minute advent and christmas thoughts

Posted by in family

my beverage of choice for late-night christmas present wrapping is not hot chocolate or a fru-fru coffee drink. instead, it is a glass of red wine. tonight it’s cabernet. tomorrow, perhaps, it’ll be a syrah. . . . the house is quiet now, but will be all a-flutter soon as my three brothers and their families as well as my parents, will descend upon us over the next few days. they’re all staying with us, so of course my bed-and-breakfast dreams are coming true: a house full of guests that…read more

waiting as a child

Posted by in family

this morning i carried on the laughlin tradition (as a smith, of course) of taking the boys to a store to shop for their christmas gifts to each other. when we were young, my parents drove my brothers and me to a store called Zayre’s and we’d each pick out a small gift to give each other while secretly passing it off to my mom or dad to pay for, and then wrapping it ourselves for the “sibling gift exchange” which was usually on christmas eve. i remember specifically one…read more

snowman!

Posted by in family

oh, ruth – we DID build a snowman. well, kenny and rowan and sawyer did. sawyer is obsessed with all snowmen this year. he points them out when we’re driving, wants us to draw them for him on his chalkboard…but he won’t go very near them. because he also exclaims, “i scared of snowman” quite a bit. this is as close as he got to the very one he helped to build! jonathan, if you’re reading…what was the name of the snowman you and i built as kids that we…read more

recipes for edibles and non-edibles

baby foodadam is SIX months old now! we started rowan and sawyer on solids (well, pureed solids) at a very early age (3 1/2 months). if it were up to kenny, adam would already have had a steak, medium rare. i put my foot down and we started him on cereal a few weeks ago. just like his older brothers, he liked it from the second spoonful. i tried to make his rice and oatmeal cereal at first, but it turned out gloppy. and gloopy. not at all appetizing looking,…read more

tired.

after blogging every day for a month, i feel as though i have nothing more to say. i want to write about the beginning of advent…but have no idea where to start. i want to show you pictures of my cozy and comfortable living room, decorated with lights and our christmas tree that we cut down ourselves yesterday…but i’m too tired. i want to tell you all the fun things that kenny and i are planning for the christmas week of my family being here…but it’s too overwhelming to write…read more
