homemade easter….

Posted by in family fun, food

i love holiday candy. i mean, REALLY love buying bags of chocolate and jelly beans and marshmallow peeps and whatever graces the aisles at halloween, christmas, valentine’s day, and easter. but i hate (that word isn’t allowed in our house unless we are referring to something evil. i give myself license here) what all that candy does to my kids, my teeth, their teeth, and our budget. 🙂 a few facebook friends’ comments about candy and posts with recieps for candy have inspired me to fill the boys’ easter baskets…read more

Dragon Training. A Review.

Posted by in Uncategorized

Today we went to see How to Train your Dragon and I can finally say that I enjoyed an entire “animated” movie from beginning to end. The boys and I have been reading aloud Cressida Cowell’s How to Train your Dragon for several weeks now. We would have been done with it ages ago if it weren’t for me dragging my feet to finish it. I’m glad we did finish it because finishing it made me actually like the book. It took me about 2/3rds of the way into it…read more

speaking of ways of learning…

Posted by in family, family fun

our spelling /teaching to read curriculum is a multi-year program that teaches students how to read by teaching them first how to spell. it came highly recommended to me by four separate families (all who don’t know each other) and since it falls very nicely into the “grammar” stage of classical method of teaching, we decided it was what we’d use to teach spelling and reading. it uses memorization of all the sounds that single letters and multi-letters make (called phonograms). we learn these phonograms during the first few months…read more

the merging of blogs

Posted by in family, family fun

my homeschool blog has completely been neglected. i had high hopes of doing weekly updates on our schooling adventures. but we had so many fun adventures that i was too tired to update! no, that’s not true – i’m never too tired to blog. i just couldn’t find the words. no, that’s not true either. i think it’s that i wasn’t sure people wanted to read it. but that hasn’t stopped me (from speaking) in the past! i’m picking kenny’s brain on how i can better use this blog software…read more

our sheep got skinny

Posted by in Uncategorized

Geneva had to be reassured that her sheep were just fine. She didn’t recognize them after the shearing, and we think by now she’s figured it out. Shearing day takes 45 minutes when you only have four sheep, and a very qualified shearer. I now have to figure out how to clean four bags worth of raw wool before i can card, draft, and spin. I’m thinking of finding someone to clean it for me.  I still can’t really get into touching sheep poop. 🙂 The shearer is pretty certain…read more

of bananas and new friends

PBS has been advertising a writing contest for children and sawyer picked up on it right away. i asked all of the boys if they wanted to write a story and draw pictures for the contest and sawyer was the only one interested. it makes sense – this is totally his bag. so last week we started drawing a “storyboard” for his story…he mapped out a story and then drew quick pictures that he’d later make into pages. we finished yesterday and went straight to the post office to mail…read more

menu plan FTW (that stands for “For The Week”)

Posted by in menu planning, Uncategorized

it was only this past year that i saw the President of the United States referred to as “POTUS” and his lovely wife, the “FLOTUS.”  you laugh, i’m sure, at my late-coming to this knowledge. am i the only one that thinks POTUS and FLOTUS sounds like a cartoon couple? and not a cool action hero cartoon, but more like “rocky and bullwinkle.” i’m not sure what they think of their acronym titles, but it can’t be good. if i were to give myself an acronym title it would be…read more

aren’t you lucky?

i’m sharing an old post with you today. because it deserves a repeat performance. i’m making these pitas to go with our dinner tonight, and really…you should try them soon. *** originally posted on May 26, 2009 i never knew how easy it was to make your own pita bread until yesterday. at some point during our first year of marriage, kenny gifted me with a gorgeous book on bread-baking. it wasn’t just any book, it was The Bread Baker’s Apprentice. if you’re a bit intimidated by bread-baking, i recommend you NOT get…read more

(for more quick takes, visit jennifer at Conversion Diary.) 1. no, i didn’t post a Lent 3 post on Sunday. we were busy celebrating the girly birthdays in my family (mom and me). it was a HUGE feast day…feast weekend, and i’m still trying to get un-full from last weekend’s eating festivities. 2. and yes, i didn’t post a menu plan. i apologize. i did plan, and we had chicken parmesan, sweet and sour meatballs, beef-in-a leaf, spaghetti and meatballs with breadsticks, and roasted chicken with masehd potates. we ALMOST…read more
