dragons and cheeseballs

Posted by: liz   in crafty, family fun

rowan requested a dragon theme for his birthday bash this year. i was thisclose to not making this cake, but kenny encouraged me by telling me he’d help me make it. thank goodness because he’s very encouraging in the “you can do this!” department while i recoil at any cake decorating opportunities. but he was right, and the cake was much easier to assemble than i originally thought. i used Pioneer Woman’s That’s the Best Frosting I’ve Ever Had recipe and the directions for assembling the cake from Family Fun magazine. Rave reviews all around!

this was the party table. “golden” plastic spoons with plastic red table cloth. totally fancy. ;)  but the main attraction of the party was right there in the middle of the table, guarded fiercely by Night Fury – the most beloved cheeseballs.

i absolutely refuse to buy these and rowan begs me to buy them each time we’re in the grocery store. he always asks why he can’t have them and i tell him it’s because i love him too much to feed him that crap on a regular basis. so…i bought the big bucket of them for his birthday party and that’s pretty much all he ate for dinner that night. it’s okay, because they’re gone now, and they were shared with 20 other little kids. not to mention that I think they taste pretty darn good too…but i still refuse to buy them regularly. what are other food your kids beg for? i totally recommend saving the purchase of them for christmas and/or birthdays. this idea brought to you from a fellow mom blogger.

more dragon fun – gronckle was hit by water balloons flung by the kids, and the ever-present pinata (generic dragon) for all the kids to whollop.

we do one big party a year. next year, adam gets the party, and then i’m headed for sleepover territory. i don’t know whether or not to be excited or nervous about moving from big, exhausting birthday parties to rowdy sleepovers. i guess we’ll see…

i’m still a blubbering momma when it comes to celebrating her kids’ birthdays. still can’t believe my oldest is 7. that means he’s halfway to being a teenager!

awesome cake! and have you seen the new-ish “natural cheetos”? organic and chemical free! practically health food! fun for a splurge, and your fingers still turn white (not orange, but good enough) :)

Love it! That is one huge container of cheese balls. :) Glad you were able to use our family’s birthday cereal tradition and make it your own.

p.s. 7 is a wonderful age. Absolutely loved that age with my kids.
