best books of 2017

Posted by in books

My Goodreads goal in 2017 was to read 40 books.  I read 70, and in those, here are my favorites. These were the cream of the crop – the very best of them, and I am a better person for having read them.  That is why I love reading so very much. It stretches and teaches you.  Especially the fiction.

Fiction:
The Mothers – Brit Bennett

I remember reading this during the winter months last year and really loving the story.  Such good writing and characters.

The Kept – Scott James

Haunting. Cold. Depressing. Fantastic.

Americanah – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

One of my favorites of the year…I loved the narrator and her decisions and the fascinating lives of her family in Africa and her new life in America.

The Hopefuls – Jennifer Close

This was as close to “chick lit” as I got this year.  Who knew I loved domestic stories of families that are so different than my own life?

Idaho – Emily Ruskovich

So, so good.  So very sad, but such a great story.

Lincoln in the Bardo – George Saunders

Moving, heartbreaking, daring.

NonFiction:

 So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed

I read bits and pieces of this to my family.  We are living in a fully recorded world.  Anything we say and do can be see around the world in minutes.  That’s scary.
