i'm happy to say that adam's eyes are in no way, shape, or form "sunken in." whew.

but we're not out of the woods yet. he's just not keeping much down, so keeping him hydrated is still important.

soooo....i need your clever ideas on keeping small children (under a year of age who hasn't had a huge variety of foods except a few pureed fruits and veggies) hydrated. the most clever, the better as we've tried nearly everything i can think of. and he is not a fan of pedialyte (who can blame him? it's so salty!).

if you'd rather send me your suggestion via email instead of leaving me a comment, my email is: elizabethsmith at zoominternet dot net

thanks. :)

Liz, Have you tried 1/2 water 1/2 favorite fruit drinks? We used to do this with Halley so she wouldn't get all the sugars that are in 100% fruit juices. Also, unsalted saltines, mashed and hydrated with water will help too - the saltines will help his tummy, and the water helps the hydration, saltines are excellent absorbers of just about everything! When I was young my Mom would always give us saltines, toast (no butter), and water or tea when we were ill. I know, I know, Adam isn't in jail, but the key is to help him feel better, the saltines and toast help to absorb the stomach acids that are contributing to the vomitting, and if he vomits, they are easy on the way back up... sorry for my bad visual post! Here's hoping he gets better soon... a 'book' from Dad always aided in the recovery as well. :-)

I hope Heather will chime in here, but I believe her solution to everything was just to keep nursing, as often as possible. I can't remember back far enough to say what we did with our kids....

Well, that was my conclusion after the last time Noah was sick. I haven't actually tried out the theory yet - last time I did try to wait 30 minutes, 15 minutes, 10 minutes, etc so it wouldn't come back up. But I thought next time I would try just nursing as much as he wanted and some would come up and some would stay down and eventually he'd be done with it.

A friend of ours taught us about a orange juice, water, and baking soda recipe - it is actually easier to keep down than water. I think three of us have tried it so far, Noah hasn't had the chance yet to try this exciting drink... :)

I always forget the recipe - I think half and half water and orange juice, and a tablespoon of baking soda per quart or so - though at least once I put in too much baking soda, and it was pretty gross.

Someone else just asked for the recipe, so I consulted Heather, and we combined our memories to come up with:

1 cup water
1 cup orange juice
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
