it's 7:56 a.m. and the house is full of the smells of a smoker at full-force.

on sunday, kenny assembled his charcoal smoker. for the past two evenings, he's studied the owner's manual and this morning, he was dressed by 6:30, gathering equipment to get the smoker started. for the past two days, an 11 lb. turkey has been thawing in our refrigerator, and last night i cleaned it out, patted it dry, pulled out the pop-up thermometer and put it back in the fridge for the night.

by 7:30 this morning, kenny's birthday dinner started smoking away:

it's supposed to take between 8-12 hours to smoke fully. i'm skeptical that it's going to cook...but that's because i'm not an experienced smoker. if it works out, we might have a smoked turkey along side of the traditional roasted turkey for thanksgiving dinner.

unfortunately, kenny's other birthday present from me (a knitted hat for those cold mornings waiting at the bus stop) didn't work out. i'm on my third attempt at a different pattern. this time i actually did a gauge swatch. hopefully it'll fit and he'll be warm again as these mornings are only getting colder!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, babe! we love you!!

Oh, Brandon would love to see this picture! He got a smoker a few years ago from his Dad and he loves it. And wait till you taste that turkey! Mmm, smoked meat is the best :) Have a great time celebrating!
