we recently got ourselves into a lot of trouble, kenny and i. we made the big mistake of purchasing two packages of playmobil knights and swords for rowan and sawyer's easter baskets.

it was a bit of an embarrassment when they kept calling the swords, "pokey things" and kept asking what to do with the shields, and wondering just why they needed "metal" armor on top of their clothes. we made an even bigger mistake by then getting the take-along playmobil castle complete with 84 more knights, 115 swords and shields, and one horse.  when they opened this up, the questions kept coming: "what does this pokey thing do?" "why does this man have a feather in his helmet?" "is it cold out? is that why they need these big hats to cover their faces?" "why do they have to protect the castle?" "what princess?" "what bad guy?"

i think it's time to introduce our 3- and 4-year-old boys to knights in shining armors, princesses-in-distress, and real-life heros like st. george. fortunately, we celebrate this day on the 23rd of this month. i just found a half price copy of St. George and the Dragon (even though it's a fictitious story of the actual St. George, who I'm learning is not actually British!), but i'm hoping it will enhance their castle-play at the very least.

are there any other recommendations for knights and castle and medieval stories for young children who don't know that a sword isn't really an inch tall and made of plastic?

you know, you can have a second chance - st. george is my mother's family saint. in the orthodox church, his saint's day is may 6th. it's a great day for picnics (usually). just have a do-over!

Hey there Liz! Remember me? Jenni! Way back from the Letsjusttalk days?! I've been lurking for a loooonnnggg time now and always always mean to post but then never do. So today I just had to chime in! This post is hilarious! I'm a mom of boys who turn their piece of toast, pop tart, whatever! Into a gun or a sword or some kind of weapon! Hahahahaha. What about that cartoon The Sword in the Stone? That was such a great cartoon from when we were little and my boys enjoy it now. Just a suggestion! BTW your boys are the cutest little blonde haired blue eyed children I've ever seen! (See I can say this because Dylan is dark haired and dark eyed and Colin is well still light haired but dark eyed!)
Take care!

Jenni's right!
I was five when the Sword in the Stone came out at Christmastime, and it literally set the stage for my whole life. The whole magic thing, the romance of knighthood thing, the misunderstood, misidentified royalty, that was me all over.
So if you don't want that, then you know where NOT to turn... How amazing that your boys have such a limited knowledge of weaponry! Now, how can we use that to your advantage?

We are currently on book 3, The Horse and His Boy, of the Chronicles of Narnia series. In fact, Narnia is currently defending Archeland from Tashbaan in a battle tonight!! Seriously, I began reading the series to Abigail a month or so ago and she loves it! It was a little hard at first for her to just sit and listen to a story with no pictures but now it is a nightly ritual. And I have noticed her pretend play is more dramatic and language is more sophisticated. I mean, how many 4 year old "dash around a puddle". I also recommend the Tales of the Kingdom series. They are out of print and harder to find but so good. Oh, I so wish we could come over and play knights! Miss you guys!

peace, Sara

Thank you for all your knights comments! (Hi Jenni! Good to see you here!) Stacy, I didn't know family's had patron saitns. I think if it were up to Rowan, it George would be ours. He's loving the new book I got on Saint George and the dragon. The Sword in the Stone is something I'll definitely check out soon. I even remember watching the cartoon movie as a child. And Sara? I never thought of starting the Narnia chronicles this early. If you're having such good times reading it with Abigail, I can't wait to start with the boys. All these great ideas - thank you!

In addition to The Sword and the Stone (which my kids love) you can probably find a child's version of the King Arthur stories somewhere. That would be pretty cool for the boys, I think!
