does anyone know of a place where you can be sent an email everytime there is a toy (and now bookmarks, journals, sippy cups!!!) recall due to high levels of lead paint?

i just read an article where it was reported that more than just toys made in china are being recalled, and now i'm beginning to get nervous. do you know how many of our toys say, "made in china" on the bottom? painted metal toy diggers and tractors are among the precious ones that i am thinking of "making disappear."

how about a christmas full of classic books and homemade gifts this year, everyone???

Here you go:

Nothing painted is safe, it seems. Especially if it was manufactured in China. I'm sticking to handmades and books this Christmas, too--but, unfortunately, I have little control over what extended family gives to the kids.

I've already asked for years that they avoid DVDs/videos and electronic toys, but we still get a lot of cheap-looking plastic toy sets that make me cringe.

I was going to leave the same website that Serina left you ...
it does seem the recalls are getting crazy.
I am actually doing a homemade Christmas thing on my blog! =)

I have noticed that there are alot of recalls lately too. It makes me want to pay more attention to what we buy for the kids!

Okay, I'm really enjoying your blog. I hope you don't mind if I stick around... I just got an email this morning with an interesting article regarding this very subject. (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2007-10-04-toy-fear_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip ) The article list a couple of American toy manufacturers that you might want to check out. Another idea might be to check out older toys you could purchase at a Good Will or Salvation Army. Those toys might be gently used, BUT they may not be exposed to the lead paint production times. Just an idea. I myself have three nieces that I will purchase "craft" type project materials for as Christmas gifts. They all love art projects and my time. And, no lead paint on those supplies. Now, if I can just keep them from eating the glue...
