Rowan's taste in music has finally arrived.

He is an Irish music lover. A while back, some friends of my parents lent us a cd by an artist (who I believe is from New Zealand) named Hollie Smith. She does a rendition of "Rowan Tree" that we wanted to hear. So now we have a burned copy of it in our car stereo. Rowan demands that we listen to ONLY:
[link(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000025AXK/qid=1108696532/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-5376570-6228922?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)] [pic(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000025AXK.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)][/link]

Very recently, he's even been picky about which song is playing. His favorite is track 1. When I finally push play after his protests, he gazes out of the window as it blares through the speakers. I swear I see him mouthing the words sometimes. He also likes track 3, which, according to my brother who plays guitar and sings for an Irish band, [link(http://www.craicwisely.com)]Craic Wisely[/link], is the most requested Irish song. Even moreso than "Danny Boy."

I'm proud of Rowan. He used to demand the "Kids praise" cd we very mistakenly bought him about a year ago. We were looking for a cd of kids voices because when he was 8 months old, he really responded to hearing kids voices. This was $4.00 at the Family bookstore. We regretted buying it after listening to it a few times. After listening to it 100 times, we really regretted it. I'm glad to say he's moved into music that we like as well.

We wonder how long until we don't recognize the music he is choosing to listen to on his walkman...I mean iPod...in 10 years.

playdate: a scheduled gathering of moms (or dads) and their kids. generally, the kids play together, while the moms (or dads) walk around following their kids (breaking up fights, encouraging sharing to 18-month-olds who won't understand that concept until they're at least 18-years-old), and picking up trails of graham crackers before little feet pulverize them into crumbs.

from left to right: bella; kate and bella; kerry playing with bella; leah; bella, cate, and sawyer; yes, that's my son playing with a pink bunny and cate; sawyer (in blue) and sofie (in pink); sofie (as called by her mama, "the sofa" - not that she resembles a sofa in any way).

someone PLEASE tell me how to get rid of all the sickies in our home! rowan woke up this morning with a slight fever and the runniest nose ever. kenny came home from work sick. we wash our hands and use purell all day long. when will we be healthy again?

fortunately, we were healthy enough on saturday so the kids could stay with our friends nikki and brian while kenny and i could enjoy a romantic night out. kenny surprised me with reservations to a restaurant that we've been wanting to try for years now: Sunnyledge. we both got dressed up (a sight that's rarely seen in our house anymore - neither of us had infant spit up or toddler food goo on our shoulders or in our hair), and built up a healthy appetite for our night on the town.

the Inn has a martini bar, so we got there early to have a drink at the bar before getting to our table. i had a chocolate covered cherry martini while kenny had his new favorite drink: scotch on the rocks. it was obviously a romantic valentine dinner for all the patrons in the dining room. except, perhaps, for the couple sitting next to us for the first half of dinner. i shouldn't have been surprised by the fact that the man was drinking a rolling rock in this swank martini bar and $50-a-bottle-of-wine restaurant. i shouldn't have been surprised because he had a mullet. but i was surprsed that while kenny and i chatted and whooped it up through our appetizer and dinner ("we're out for dinner! no kid menus here! i hope rowan went to bed easily for them. i hope sawyer isn't too fussy"), they sat and stared at the table. there was hardly a word spoken between them. i almost felt bad for them. almost. perhaps she finally told him she didn't like his hair and he refused to even entertain the idea of cutting it ("but i look so macho with the long wispies in the back of my neck!").

fortunately, despite their lack in conversation, kenny and i enjoyed our wonton shrimp and cream of asparagus soup. about an hour later, our entrees arrived. kenny ordered "surf and turf" which was shrimp and filet mignon. i ordered the tuna steak. when we used to go out for dinner, i would always get the better-tasting meal. kenny admitted to this: i had a knack for ordering the yummier meal. not this time. the surf and turf far surpassed the tuna steak in flavor and presentation. and i don't eat shrimp all that often (i think the last time i ate it was over a year ago, at kenny's aunt shirley's house in maryland), but the shrimp was succulunt.

after the mullet couple left, a younger couple filled their table. they were obviously much happier with each other and she kept eyeing a ring on her left ring finger. i leaned over to them and asked if they had just gotten engaged. they said they got engaged in august, but were still giddy with anticipation of their wedding this coming december. the best part of the night was when they told us that it looked as though we just met. kenny laughed and said, "nope. we have two kids at home. we rarely get out!" that was a surprise to them.

that means we don't look as old and haggard as we sometimes feel. like today. it was a long, sick-filled day with a toddler who whines because he doesn't feel well, and a whiny husband...just kidding! he's far from whiny. he actually just helped me clean up the kitchen, even though i'm sure he'd rather be curled up on the couch. and he brought me home flowers and new liqueur called sabra because it's orange-chocolate flavored and he knows that's my favorite flavor combo. definitely not a whiny husband. definitely the best there is.

happy valentine's day, love!

Sawyer is one day shy of 5 months old. He's growing by leaps and bounds and does things everyday that amaze me. I can't believe we're at these milestones again (Rowan was just here a year ago!).

We started on the rice cereal milestone last week. Doctors recommend 4 months (our doctors dont really push it, though), and books recommend 6 months. We Smiths, decide when is best for us Smiths. And Sawyer wanted it last week. We could tell with all the leg kicking and arm flailing and HUGE smiles and wide open mouths and SWALLOWS with each spoonful. Kenny said it's his way of saying to us, "Finally! STEAK!"

He's also hanging out more in his exersaucer. He's standing on his legs with much more strength (we're holding him, of course) and he's learning more and more to soothe himself - a very welcome milestone. This means more sleep. For all of us. And no more pillow-throwing at Kenny in the middle of the night.

I have to give HUGE PROPS to Kenny though. He's the one who gets up with Sawyer first thing in the morning. Even if this means it's 5:00 in the morning. I'm still feeding him twice at night, so by 5:00, I'm dead to the world, and Kenny and Sawyer bond.

He loves his brother. Rowan gets more smiles than we do. When Sawyer's in his swing, Rowan helps him go faster. And higher. We naturally respond with, "Rowan, be carfeul!" But Sawyer isn't scared. In fact, he's smiling and laughing at Rowan. When Rowan is jamming Sawyer's pacifier into his mouth, Sawyer is laughing at his brother's face so close to his own while we're saying, "Rowan, he doesn't want his pacifier right now - leave him alone!" I'll bet that if put in a room together along, they would get along just fine, and wouldn't need us to supervise at all. But I'm reluctant to give it a try. :)

Sawyer just had his first cold. It was accompanied by the worst cough. I thought he had croupe or whooping cough, but that was just my paranoia. It seems to be much better today and now I have his cold. Ever since Rowan got sick on New Year's Day (in Boston), there has been at least one sick person in this house. That's almost a month and a half of sickness. How can we prevent this from happening next winter?

I really enjoy the traditional pancakes that we as good Episcopalians eat on Shrove Tuesday. Or Fat Tuesday.

The past few years, we've eaten at the annual Pancake supper that our church's youth group cooks. But we decided for several reasons to eat at home this year. So I whipped up two batches of pancakes (one recipe from the 1950's Betty Crocker standby, the other from The Joy of Cooking) and fried us up some turkey bacon. The first batch looked as though they weren't going to rise, and this is why I made another batch from a different recipe. We had a huge stack of pancakes, but this is a good thing as they freeze well and Rowan likes to eat a pancake for breakfast every once in a while.

But enough about pancakes.

Lent is starting way early this year. My dad says it's the earliest that it falls. My mom says it's just way too early (she's still emotionally in Advent. I'm with her...although I'm still in Christmas).

So, the groundhog saw his shadow and we are starting Lent. Six more weeks of "winter" on a few different levels. At least there is Easter to look forward to. A chillier one than normal this year.

Rowan has a girlfriend. Her name is Cate.

Cate and Rowan like each other because they have a lot in common:
They like Elmo and Big Bird and Ernie.
They like the Baby Einstein videos.
They like to eat yogurt and hot dogs.
They like to chase each other and laugh.
They like to hug.

Sawyer's girlfriend, Sofie, have yet to notice each other. But Kerry and I are working on it. :)

(Cate's mom and I egged them on for these photos. Does that make us crazy? :D )

Thanks to Leah's mom, these photos are made possible. We all like our playdates. They give us a few hours on sanity while our kids fall in love with each other.

So Kenny and I have this dream, or "plan for the future" that we talk about all the time. There are so many layers to this dream and we add to it everytime it comes up in conversation. It started out as, "We should open up a bakery some day," and now it's become, "We should open up a bakery that is also a coffee shop where Liz can bake all day long in a place sort of like Ohiopyle State Park (the heart of the place - where the Trading Post is) and we'll call it 'Elizabeth's' (that was Kenny's idea)."

Recently, a building in our neighborhood went up for sale. It used to be a small Italian grocer that smelled like smoke. (When you bought a loaf of Mancini's Italian bread, the crust even smelled like smoke.) It has an apartment on the second floor. If we were to change the dream to, "Let's open a bakery/coffee shop in a residential neighborhood so commuters can get their breakfast on the way from work, Ladies-Who-Lunch can "lunch" there, and Grammy's famous poundcake will sell like hotcakes," this would be the perfect place:

I know it doesn't look much. It certainly doesn't help that the picture was taken on a rather rainy day. But with a fresh paint job, brand new awnings, a hot new sign above the door...it would make a lovely little neighborhood gathering place.

We have finally decided against buying it (although the price is certainly right) as we really do want to open up our dream bakery/coffee shop in a more rural setting.

Is anyone else annoyed by how much standing and clapping there is during the President's State of the Union? Come on, already. Leave "tradition" behind and let's just get on with it.

**********************

Kenny and I are slowly getting away from "Reality TV" and enjoying less television altogether. Except for "Lost" on Wednesday nights. As Kenny stated just tonight, "This is the freakiest show, ever." It's also the only show that makes your heart pound from fear, dread, and the element of surprise.

**********************

Thanks to Steven and Peg, Kenny and I are also finding ourselves addicted to Miss PacMan and Galaga. It's just like old times playing Miss PacMan on my television set. My dad bought our first Atari 800 way back when (when was it, Dad?) and the mammoth tv that took up the entire kitchen table was home to many Frogger, PacMan, and Centipede games. I also did some programming back then:

10 PRINT "My name is Betsy"
20 GOTO 10
30 End

I was cool.
